To obtain a driver’s licence in Ontario

Hello! Now that you landed in Canada, you will likely need to obtain your Canadian driver’s licence as soon as possible, both for transportation purposes and to qualify for various jobs. In the province of Ontario, you can schedule an appointment at https://drivetest.ca/ in this post, we will focus on the driver’s licence for small vehicles.

The regular process has 3 steps and it takes at least 3 years to obtain the G Full licence:

  • Take the written test to obtain the learner’s licence or G1. you can take the test in over two dozens languages. Here you can find the Manuals in English.
  • Once you get your G1 licence in the mail, you can drive as a learner for 1 year
  • After accumulating experience for 1 year, you can apply to the G2 licence and take the driving test in English or French
  • Once you get your G2 licence in the mail, you will have to wait another year and take another driving test to qualify for the G Full licence, with no restrictions.

Now, if you cannot provide proof of your driving experience in your home country, you will only be eligible to apply for the G1 licence, which is for novice drivers. This entails some limitations on your mobility, such as having to drive accompanied by someone who holds a G full licence and not being able to drive at night or on highways. Additionally, this type of licence is more expensive, as it increases your vehicle insurance costs.

However, if you have more than 2 years of driving experience in your home country, you can bypass these restrictions and go from the G1 licence to the G Full and save not only years of proceedings, but also save on testing fees and spend less money on car insurance. You will only need to provide a translation of your driver’s license, which must have at least 6 months of validity, as your driver’s record, issued in the last 6 months.

Depending on your country and state of origin, you may need to request it from your city of origin or have it issued online. Here are some examples:

  • Mexico: This document can be obtained from the institution that issues the driver’s license. In most states, you can request it from the Secretary of Mobility of the state. In Guerrero, you must obtain it from your municipality. Check your license to determine where to request it.
  • Chile: The Civil Registry issues it online.
  • Venezuela: The Ministry of Popular Power for Transportation issues it online.
