How to Enroll your Kids in School in Canada 🏫✨

¿Are you ready to enroll your kids in school for the first time?

Approximately 20% of immigrants to Canada each year are children and teenagers under 15 years of age, estimated at over 50,000  (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)! It is critical that they continue their education here, to accelerate their integration, learn the language and make
friends, and we the parents will also make friends through the school!

One of the most important steps when immigrating is enrolling your children in school. This process can vary depending on your child’s age and educational level, but don’t worry—we’re here to guide you through it step by step!

  1. Find the Perfect School: In Ontario, schools are organized by districts. There are two main provincial school boards: the Catholic Board of
Education (https://www.dpcdsb.org/) and the Ontario Public School Board’s Association (https://opsba.org/). To find the school closest to your home, Google Maps is your best friend! 🗺️
  2. Registration by Age: Depending on your child’s age, they can enroll in:
    • Junior and Senior Kindergarten: 4-5 years old
    • Elementary School: Grades 1 to 5 (6-11 years old)
    • Middle School: Grades 6 to 8 (11-14 years old)
    • High School: Grades 7 to 12 (14-18 years old)

Schedules and Additional Services: Most schools operate from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM. Many offer before and after-school care for an additional fee. If you live far
away, you can request school bus service.

In high schools, schedules may vary, and transportation is usually not provided.

4. Required Documents: The registration process begins online, on the school’s website. You’ll need at least the following documents for registration:

    • Birth certificate and/or passport
    • Report card from the last completed school year (if applicable)
    • Immunization record 💉
    • Proof of residence (utility bill, internet bill, etc.). If you only have a rental agreement, they might ask for a notarized copy.
    • For the Catholic Board: Baptismal certificate of the child or one of the parents.

5. ESL Classes: If your child is eligible, ask about ESL (English as a Second Language) classes. These classes are designed to help
immigrant children learn English faster and catch up with their peers.

6. Document Translation: If any of these documents are in a language other than English or French, you’ll need to have them translated. At Malex Translations, we’re here to help with official and certified translations, ensuring you have everything ready in time for enrollment. Contact us today! 📄✍️
