Making Your Canadian Dream a Reality: Essential Documentation for Landing

Congratulations for completing your immigration process! You have invested a significant number of resources and time to make sure you are landing in Canada with a legal program that will allow you and your family building up a brilliant future in the beautiful North. Whether you will come through a refugee program, or as an international student, sponsored immigration or any other of the dozens of programs available, we look forward to your contributions to this great land.

Now, I know that you are tired of thinking about paperwork, but here are a few documents that maybe you have not thought of, and these will be critical after you land. The following documents will make your life easier:

  • Medical Report of each member of your family: A comprehensive medical report stating your overall health condition and any regular medication you take.
  • For your children: if you have minor children, make sure you bring your vaccination cards and the report card of the last academic year they completed. Specifically in Ontario, we have a Catholic Board of Education for free elementary and high school. If you want to enroll your child in the Catholic Board, you will be asked to submit a copy of the baptism certificate. An important note: your child needs to come with a legal status as your dependant to be able to enroll in school.
  • Academic Documents: Gather the original transcripts and diplomas from your high school and any post-secondary education you have completed. Additionally, include any trade certificates you have obtained. Depending on how you plan to develop your professional life in Canada, you may decide to revalidate your credentials and put your intellectual assets to good use (more information about this here)
  • Driver’s Licence and Driver’s Record: If you hold a driver’s licence from your home country, bring it along with a separate document that verifies your years of driving experience. Make sure your driver licence has at least another year before expiry and request your driver’s record just before moving to Canada, since it is valid for 6 months only. This will help validate your driving history and potentially expedite the process of obtaining a full license in Canada. Otherwise, you may be limited to a learner permit, which can impact your insurance costs and mobility. (more information about this here)
  • Financial Records: It’s a good idea to bring bank statements and your latest tax return, if available. It is also a great idea to bring recent paystubs that can prove your employment history. If there is a credit bureau in your country, bring your latest report, this may help to prove your trustworthiness to potential landlords and lenders.
  • Personal reference and employment records: this may help you to prove your work experience and help you build trust.

Keep in mind that all documents must be originals, not photocopies. If your country issues digital documents, a PDF file with a digital signature will suffice.

These documents will require ATIO certified translations.
