I was recently asked to edit the translation of some documents from southern America into Canadian English, because another translator who was not familiar with that Spanish dialect, had relied on his prior knowledge, and did not pay enough attention to the context. Therefore, he mistakenly translated “testimonio” as witness’ statement, instead the accurate translation in the specific context as “notarized copy.”
The golden rule in translation: Assume nothing!
Every word, phrase, and sentence carries a unique weight and cultural significance. We must tread carefully and embrace the mantra of “assume nothing” to ensure our translations are nothing short of exceptional!

– Tailor with taste: Each language has its own unique rhythm, idioms, and expressions. The translator must adapt the translations to ensure they flow naturally, resonating with the target audience.
– Proofread, polish, perfect: Never underestimate the power of thorough proofreading. Every word and sentence must be scrutizined, ironing out any potential mistakes or misinterpretations.
